Summary

Buffalo Jambalaya 2002 was the best Buffalo Jambalaya weekend ever, so we have our work cut out for us! Fortunately we have Keith Frank returning to help us make BJ2003 even better. Joining Keith Frank and his Soileau Zydeco band will be the great traditional Cajun band, Charivari and Lil' Malcolm and the Houserockers Zydeco band. A special treat for this year will be chef Michael Richard a past winner of "Best Louisiana Chef." Our dance teachers for 2003 are the well-known SW Louisiana Zydeco and Jitterbug instructor Michael Seider and DC favorite Cajun instructors Michael Hart and Sharon Schiliro.

Buffalo Jambalaya transforms beautiful Buffalo Gap Camp in West Virginia into an authentic Cajun/zydeco community. Not only do we have the best in music and dance, we offer great musical instrument workshops led by our guest artists. There are dance workshops for all levels of dancers from beginners on up and special events focus on making your weekend a true Louisiana experience. Our talented performers will lead Cajun/ Creole culture sessions as they share their experiences of growing up in SW Louisiana; talented craft artists will help you create that perfect Mardi Gras mask or costume; and you'll love the gourmet Cajun food prepared by our award-winning chef.
We’re planning to have another "best camp ever," so plan to join us and make it happen!

BJ2003 is very proud to have Keith and his Soileau Zydeco band. Band again this year. Keith comes from one of the most famous familiesin zydeco music. Playing since 1993, they are the most sought after zydeco band in Louisiana.

We will also be hosting Buffalo Jambalaya newcomers Charivari and Lil' Malcolm and the Houserockers.

Michael Seider
(Zydeco), from New Orleans, has taught both traditional and the new "Open" styles of zydeco dancing at Augusta, Eschoheag, RI and New York. Michael will also be teaching his own Whiskey River Jitterbug in a special session. Teaching with him is Barbara Davis. Michael Hart and Sharon Schiliro will teach Cajun dance. Mike and Sharon have been teaching Cajun and Zydeco on the east coast for over 10 years and will bring smoothness and style to your Cajun moves. Lilli Ann Carey, a Seattle native, will be bringing her unique expertise in waltz and Zydeco partnering skills. Her partners will be west coast instructors Dana Mandell and Linda Townsend.

Michael Richard, the head chef for Cafe Vermilionville in Lafayette, LA brings 13 years of Cajun culinary talent to BJ2003. He has been named Louisiana chef of the year and has been guest chef at events such as the 2002 Saulieu, France C/Z festival. He’ll provide dinner at 6pm on Thursday, three meals a day Friday and Saturday, brunch Sunday and snacks after the evening dances. As a final note, if you're heading to Lafayette, Cafe Vermilionville belongs on your "must do" list. Please go to the Cafe Vermilionville website to check out the wonderful menus.

On-site: The 200-acre camp, nestled in the mountains near Capon Bridge, WV, is about 2 hours west of Washington, D.C. and 2 hours east of Pittsburgh, PA. The grounds include wooded hills with hiking trails, a lake with a sandy beach, sauna, dining hall, an open-air dance pavilion, and a large dance hall. Off-site
Campers who are not really campers will be glad to know that in our motel-barren location in West Virginia there are actually two Bed and Breakfast locations within 20 miles of Buffalo Gap Camp (see below). Both are located south of Capon Bridge,WV and their proprietors assure us the drive to "town" is 12-14 minutes. Add to that another 5-6 minutes to come up the hill to camp and it's not a bad drive. Many other accomodations are located off Rt 50 near Winchester and can be accessed with any search engine.

Two local Bed and Breakfasts (These are not associated with Buffalo Jambayala).

Two local budget motels (These are not associated with Buffalo Jambayala).

  • Hayfield Motel in Gore, Va - 540-877-1019 (closest to camp)
  • Mohawk Motel in Winchester, Va - 540-667-1410 (owned by a Harley motorcycle owner)

Many other accomodations are located off Rt 50 near Winchester and can be accessed with any search engine.
